What separates us, what connects us? Is there a universal principle of connection?
Following numerous film and video productions, BERLIN MOVES
presents a live dance double bill. On the swimming pool stage at Uferstudios, young dancers explore the tension between separation and connection in two distinct yet complementary choreographies.
TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS is an interdisciplinary dance production about the search for
connectedness. Between club culture and meditation, external realities meet inner perception. Hip-hop and breaking encounter meditative, trance-like movements and yoga asanas. Driven by Chicago house beats, contemporary electronic sounds and the atmospheric, meditative compositions of Meredith Monk, dance rituals emerge between isolation and collective experience.
Separating and connecting networks form the central choreographic and visual principle. The stage evokes nervous systems, organic structures and a cosmic web of invisible relationships. Together with the tape art collective Tape That and video artist Miguel Canal, an installation emerges – a map of inner and outer experiences that extends onto the dancers’ bodies.
Under the artistic direction of Lior Shneior, the BERLIN MOVERS Ensemble develops the production through a collaborative process. Dance, media art and tape art merge in
TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS to create an immersive performance that asks how we can find connection in a digitalised present – with ourselves, with each other and with the world.
The evening opens with BOBBY, a collage of short choreographies by young dancers from different Berlin crews.
In BOBBY, powerful dance images emerge, inspired by the music of Bobby McFerrin. His work brings together jazz, classical music, gospel and pop, creating a musical language that builds bridges between Afro-diasporic and European musical traditions. McFerrin became world-famous with Don’t Worry, Be Happy – a song whose title was inspired by a mantra of the spiritual teacher Meher Baba and which stands for optimism and openness. BOBBY is an invitation to discover one’s own roots, to embrace differences as a strength and to allow new connections to grow together.
